Out and About
Parliamentary Delegation to Nepal and India
I was honoured to take part in the Parliamentary Delegation to the Democratic Republic of Nepal and Republic of India from February 10 to 14, 2020.
We had an incredible visit to New Delhi, where we spent one night and then boarded a flight for Kathmandu, Nepal, where we met with the Prime Minister and the ministers. We toured parliament and had a lovely dinner. I was most impressed with the equality provisions in the Nepali constitution, which state that women must make up at least 30% of the legislative body.
The next day, we flew back to New Delhi, where we met with the Speaker of the Lok Saba and the ministers of India. I was in awe of the sheer magnanimity of where we were and the people we were meeting with.
We also had an opportunity to visit the magnificent Taj Mahal and it was much like walking into a story book. The colours, the diversity, the languages, the people, the smells, the tastes and wide range of feeling all made the trip to India one I will never forget.
I hope to visit again soon and stay longer.
